Free Cockatiel Pattern: Most Popular Pattern Yet 😱

After the success of my chickadee pattern, I knew it was time to create another birdie friend. I picked a cockatiel because, lucky me, I already had the perfect colours on hand, score!


Since sharing this pattern on Instagram, it’s quickly become my most popular design. It’s a fun and fast make, perfect for anyone who loves cute, chubby birds.

Super Bulky Yarn (#6)

  • off-white

  • dark grey

  • light grey

  • peach

  • yellow

5 mm crochet hook

Embroidery Needle

Safety Eyes - 12 mm OR Small bit of black yarn

Scissors

Crochet Cockatiel Abbreviations

mr - magic ring

sc - single crochet

dc - double crochet

inc - increase

dec -  decrease

sl st - slip stitch

BLO - back loop only

f/o -- fasten off

bbl - bobble stitch

cc - change colour


Body

Starting in dark grey.

R1. 6 sc in mr [6]

R2. (inc) x 6 [12]

R3. (1 sc, inc) x6 [18]

R4. (2 sc, inc) x6 [24]

R5. 24 sc

cc  white in last stitch.

R6. 24 sc  [24]

cc light grey in last stitch

R7. 24 sc [24]

R8.  24 sc [24]

R11. 6 sc, cc peach, bbl, cc light grey, 6 sc, cc peach, bbl, cc light grey, 10 sc [24]

If you plan on using safety eyes, place them now between rows 5 and 6 with 4 stitches in between.


Begin stuffing at this point and continue to stuff as you go.


R12. BLO (2sc, dec) x 6 [18]

R13. In both loops, (1 sc, dec) x 6 [12]

R14. (dec x 6) fasten off. [6]


Sew beak between eyes over 3 stitches.


Wing

4 dc in mr and fasten off


Sew wings to row 7 and 8 of the body.

Sew one upside down so they face they look even.

Cheeks (Make two in peach)

6 sc in mr

sl st in first st

invisible finish

Sew between rows 3 and 5 on either side of the eyes.


Head Feathers

In yellow, make a slip knot.

At the back of the head, attatch your yarn between rows 3 and 2.

Chain 3 and sl st between rows 2 and 1. Chain 4 and sl st between row 1 and the centre of the magic ring. Chain 4 and sl st between the centre of the magic ring and row 1 of the front of the head.  Chain 3 and sl st beetween rows 1 and 2 on the front side of the head.

Face details

Embroider a beak between row 5 and 6 across 2 stitches.

Embroider eyes between row 4 and 5 (If not using safety eyes).
